Major League Baseball honored Roberto Clemente on Thursday night, paying tribute to a player who arguably did more to expand access to the sport for people of color than anyone but Jackie Robinson.
“Roberto Clemente is a figure for Latinos just like Jackie Robinson was for African Americans,” Puerto Rican shortstop Carlos Correasaid in 2019. “Clemente didn’t just break barriers but inspired other Latinos to get into baseball.”
